Having left it far too long to write my first headteacher’s newsletter of the academic year, I am pledging to do better in 2019! To that end, here is another edition after only another 7 weeks in school! Although this update isn’t as lengthy as its pre-Christmas counterpart, there has still been plenty happening at Chesterton.

I would also like to give you an update on many of the fantastic things that have been going on this term, from musical moments to exciting English, sporting success to festive fun.

As you may know, at the end of the academic year, we usually award prizes to children who have read consistently well over the year and have reached a certain number of Reading Nights in their Reading Diary.

click to downloadCycling Proficiency volunteers wanted
Cycling Proficiency is a free course offered to Year 6 Pupils and run by a selection of qualified and assistant volunteers in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. For this valuable resource to continue, we require a suitable ratio of adults to children for safe supervision on the road. As some of our adult helpers are moving on from Chesterton School this summer, we are appealing for new recruits.

You may remember Antonella and her children, Marta and Matteo, who live in Brescia near Lake Garda. Antonella is a primary teacher, Marta is 11 and Matteo, 10, and they all speak perfect English. A friend of Ms Durham’s, who is a Teaching Assistant, has paid a visit to Antonella’s school in Italy, hence the link to Chesterton.

We are holding a 'Travelling Books' book fair here at school which will run from Wednesday 15th May to Tuesday 21st May, straight after school.

As in previous years, we are holding our May Day festivities a little later in the month - on the last Thursday of Term 5. This should give us a better chance of warmer weather (although the recent weather hasn’t done badly so far!) and also keeps us clear of the very busy build up to SATs tests.

We would like to invite you to an information evening about phonics to be held in school on Tuesday 30th April at 5pm. The session will be based around the Letter and Sounds Scheme, which we use in Lower School to develop and support your child’s early reading and writing skills.

The annual ‘World Book Day’ is fast approaching and we are busy planning for a ‘Book Week’ in school, which will run from Monday 4th March through to Friday 8th March. Although Thursday 7th March is officially World Book Day, we will be holding book-related activities throughout the entire week.

As you are aware, KS2 SATs are approaching for our Year 6 children (w/c Monday 13th May 2019). Therefore, as you may have seen on the school calendar, we thought that it would be useful to hold another KS2 SATs information evening for parents on Wednesday 30th January at 6.30pm.

We are delighted to inform you that this year’s Christmas lunch will be cooked on Wednesday 19th December by the School Lunch Company and served by the staff and governors. The lunch will consist of roast turkey or Quorn, roast and creamed potatoes with a selection of vegetables, followed by a Christmas tree ice cream dessert.

The Chesterton Choir will be taking part in 'The Big Christmas Sing' with other Oxfordshire Schools on Wednesday 28th November at Oxford Town Hall. They will be performing with Chesterton Choir and with the massed school choir.
click to downloadTesco Community Poppy Field: 2nd November 2018
To honour the centenary of the end of the First World War, Tesco are looking to create a field of poppies on the hill next to Tesco, Bicester. The idea is that the children from the schools of Bicester are invited to make poppies out of used plastic bottles, using the instructions below, and then have these poppies ‘planted’ on the hill on the week commencing the 5th November.

We are pleased to announce that Team Superschools will be hosting a sponsored event at Chesterton School on the morning of Friday 28th June, with a special visit from gymnast Kristian Thomas (Multiple international medallist, including Olympic Bronze Medallist at London 2012).

Mrs Rotherham (PE co-ordinator) and I are currently discussing the exact schedule and format of the day, but it will be broadly similar to previous years. Please find attached information an entry form for a Bicester Athletic Club cross country fun run at Bicester Sports Association, Chesterton on Sunday 9th December. The event is held in memory of Andy Reading, a keen runner and member of B.A.C., who, as many of you will know, was also Headteacher of our school from 1979-1991.
