Art and Design Curriculum Statement
At Chesterton Primary School, Art and Design is an area of the curriculum which allows children to express themselves in a variety of different ways. We believe that teaching and learning in Art is particularly important because it stimulates creativity, imagination and inventiveness.
We encourage children to develop their creative and imaginative talents through learning skills and techniques and using a variety of materials, media and tools. We aim to develop and extend children’s skills in painting, printing, drawing, sculpture and textiles through a range of varied experiences.
Our Art curriculum is carefully planned to engage and excite all children. Throughout the school, Art is developed through both discrete and topic-related lessons, giving children a purpose to their pieces. Children begin their journey through the Art curriculum in Foundation Stage through Expressive Art and Design, where they are given many opportunities to explore with paints, pencils, chalks, pastels and clay. Within Key Stage One and Two, children develop their ideas through focussed lessons linking to the wider curriculum and their topic work. Furthermore, children will be exposed to various artists, from around the world and across history, and use this as inspiration for their own Art work. They also learn to evaluate their work and consider how they might develop their style in future pieces.
Children in Key Stage One and Two have their own sketchbook. These are a place for the children to gather, collect ideas, experiment and reflect. Children build a sense of ownership as they are able to see their Art progress and development throughout their own artist journey; taking pride in the improvement of skills, not just the final piece.
In addition to sketchbooks, children are able to showcase their Art work with each other, parents and carers through exhibitions of work in classes and worships. Each year, in June, we hold an Arts Week which focuses on a particular aspect of The Arts. The week is solely dedicated to these fundamental Art skills and is celebrated with an exhibition to the whole school and parents at the end of the week.
