Curriculum: D&T
Design and Technology Intent Curriculum Statement
At Chesterton CE Primary School, we provide children with a range of Design and Technology topics in order to develop pupils' skills and abilities in engaging with the designed and made world. Our pupils begin to develop their D&T skills through the Expressive Arts & Design elements of the EYFS curriculum and this is built upon throughout Key Stages 1 and 2.
Children are encouraged to think creatively about the work they plan, design, make and evaluate. Furthermore, they are encouraged to apply their problem solving skills both individually and when working as a team. We feel that this supports children in developing their innovative ideas and having the opportunity to execute plans in a practical context. Where possible, the projects that the children undertake are linked to our overarching curriculum topics, providing meaning and purpose to the children’s work. Throughout their topics, the children are encouraged to reflect on key events and individuals from history and the present day who have helped shape the world of Design and Technology.
Cooking and nutrition topics are taught in all year groups. Children are educated in where food comes from, the importance of having a healthy, balanced diet and how to safely prepare sweet and savoury dishes. We also encourage children to develop an enjoyable and positive relationship with food. In addition, children are provided with opportunities to learn from chefs and partake in workshops.
