Curriculum: Geography
Geography Curriculum Statement
Our aims at Chesterton CE Primary School are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography through providing a broad, balanced and deep curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills; and for the children to develop a love for, and keen interest in, Geography.
Over their time with us, our children’s geographical learning should start with the familiar and, as the children move through the year groups, study of Geography moves from the immediate locality to finding out about people and places further afield. By teaching children in this way, progression within the curriculum is clear.
By nature, Geography is an investigative subject. Geographical mapping and enquiry skills should be developed from an early age, with children finding out information for themselves through surveys and measurements, as well as using books and other sources of information. An important element of Geography is the study of the environment, our impact on it and what we can do about sustainable development.
Geography has specific skills, knowledge and understanding explicitly taught, as well as maximising any cross-curricular links. These links are built with other subjects, predominantly, but not exclusively, with writing, Art, Music, History and Science. The use of the school’s Eco-Council, our Forest School and our link with Qugqwala School in South Africa allows children to have a purposeful connection with the world around us. Our residential visits also allow first-hand opportunities for the children to put their geographical skills into practice.
