Curriculum: Music
Music Curriculum Statement

At Chesterton CE Primary School, we aim to develop a love of Music whilst increasing self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement. We foster individuality and encourage all children to express themselves through musical performance. We hope to sow the seeds for an appreciation for Music that will last a lifetime, recognising that performing and listening to music can have a multitude of benefits.

Through our curriculum scheme (Charanga) and linked topic work, pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. To ensure a thorough progression, we provide a spiral curriculum to allow development and mastery of skills. Music from different countries is also celebrated, particularly that connected to our link school in South Africa. Pupils learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, and also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. In Early Years, Music as part of the Expressive Arts and Design curriculum in addition to enhancing learning in all areas of the curriculum, as key skills are paired with music as memory aids.

In KS1, the children enjoy singing songs, chanting and exploring rhymes. They have the opportunity to play both tuned and percussion instruments which they use to create, select and combine sounds. They also listen and move to a wide range of music.

Children in KS2 are given the opportunity to build on the skills acquired in KS1 so that, by the end of Year 6, they sing and play with increasing control and self-confidence. They deepen their understanding of music from across the world and the significance of music through history. We encourage children to explore their own musical preferences and discuss these with confidence.

All children take part in weekly singing sessions which contribute to our Harvest, Christmas, Easter and May Day celebrations. Our Christmas celebrations, end of year performances and special events provide an opportunity for the children to share and celebrate their work in Music with parents, governors and other friends of the school. Given the recent challenges of public musical performance, we have remained committed to providing outlets to share and celebrate music with an audience in a range of creative ways.
