Curriculum: Computing
Computing Curriculum Statement

At Chesterton CE Primary School, our Computing curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in 'digital literacy', 'computer science', and 'information technology', to ensure that children become competent in safely using, as well as understanding digital technology.

Our intention is to enable all pupils to embrace and utilise technology in a socially responsible and safe way. Not only do we want them to be digitally literate and competent users of technology, but through our computing lessons, we want them to develop creativity, resilience and problem-solving and critical thinking skills. We want learners to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact, both positive and negative, that Computing can have on their learning, development and well-being. We aim for our curriculum to help pupils understand the right balance with technology is key to an effective education and a healthy lifestyle.

The Computing curriculum is delivered through the use of the '123ICT' scheme of work. Discrete units are carefully planned to ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year by year so that learning is successfully embedded. In Computing lessons, the pupils will often use either iPads or laptops to access a range of apps and software. Discrete Computing lessons will focus on the curriculum skills of information technology, digital literacy and computer science. Where appropriate, meaningful links are made between the Computing curriculum and the wider curriculum as a tool to demonstrate, present and rehearse knowledge, understanding and skills within other subjects. We also recognise that technology can allow all pupils to share their learning in creative ways, and understand the accessibility opportunities technology can provide for our pupils. We also teach a progression of Computing vocabulary to support pupils in their understanding.

Computing in the Early Years is explored and taught through enhanced play provision. Pupils have opportunities to share their experiences and understanding of various technology equipment. Learning is built upon this through the modelling of using technology in a safe and responsible way. Pupils have opportunities to explore technology through the use of iPads, laptops, and programmable toys, such as Beebots.

Online Safety learning has a high profile with annual, termly and other appropriate opportunities to review, reflect and extend learning in this area. One example of this is our annual 'Internet Safety Week'. Online safety procedures are communicated with all staff and parents.

Computing opportunities also exist beyond the school gates as pupils are encouraged to promote learning at home through access to links on the school website, and popular online resources including: Times Tables Rockstars and Mathletics.
