Autumn 2024 The Eco Council are thrilled to announce that over the Summer holidays, we have secured our Green Flag status with distinction from the academic year 2023/2024! Here is some feedback we received from the Eco Schools team after our application was submitted: "It is evident that young people in your school are aware of environmental issues and passionate about protecting our planet....We also loved learning that the wider community and various organisations joined your pupils and staff with your endeavours, some of which include RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch and the Park and Stride initiatives....From the additional evidence uploaded, it’s clear that sustainability themes are widely covered in your school’s learning through your lessons. We especially liked that Y1 students took part in a Healthy Eating Design and Technology project, that Y6 looked at evolution and adaptations in their Science lessons and that Y2 children observed different mini-beasts living in micro habitats. We loved seeing the uploaded worksheets and lesson material - we’re sure your students enjoyed those topics! In addition to all these endeavours, the amount of work and effort you put into the sustainability in the curriculum planning is inspiring. Lessons like this will provide children with the knowledge they need to successfully (and confidently) support the Eco-School’s ethos in the future...Congratulations on your Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction. We encourage everyone involved to take great pride from their wonderful achievements – your year of activity has been inspiring." We are now waiting on the delivery to of our plaque to proudly display and are looking forward to see projects we can get involved in during the 2024/2025 academic year. Summer 2024 Hope Garden As you hopefully will have noticed, The Hope Garden (at the front of the school) has gone from strength to strength over the past three years, since our initial renovation and planting project that was completed in Spring 2021. . We feel that the garden is a now much more usable area, with seating for staff and pupils during the day, or for parents when collecting children. It also gives visitors to the school a really positive first impression of Chesterton and reflects our love of nature and the outdoors.... As before, to contribute to the feeling that the garden belongs to the whole school community, we are asking for pupils and their families to donate a plant that will then form part of the revamped borders. Find out how to contribute here and click here for our Plant Wish List. No Mow May We are inviting you all to take part in No Mow May! This campaign aims to give wildlife a much needed boost during the summer. You can choose not to mow all of, or some of any green space that you have available. The idea is that this enables smaller plants and wildflowers, such as daisies, dandelions and clover to flower and provide much needed food for pollinators such as butterflies and bees. Furthermore, it helps to reduce urban heat and lock away atmospheric carbon below ground. Full details here |
